Why AI Matters for Engineers
A personal reflection on Artificial Intelligence — Curiosity, what it is, how it’s shaping our world and the big questions it raises about the future of tech and humanity.
Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about Artificial Intelligence — not just the buzzword version, but what it really means. The idea that we can build machines that mimic or even surpass human intelligence is both thrilling and a little surreal.
So I decided to sit down and write a few thoughts. This isn’t meant to be a technical deep dive—just an honest reflection on what AI is, where it’s heading, and why it matters to me (and maybe you too).
What Is AI, Really?
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is essentially the science of building machines that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. These tasks include
- Understanding and processing language
- Recognizing images or speech
- Making decisions
- Learning from data (aka machine learning)
Most of the AI we interact with today is what’s called Narrow AI (as Weak AI or Artificial Narrow Intelligence)—it’s really good at one specific thing. Think: the algorithms behind Netflix recommendations, voice assistants like Siri, or even the facial recognition that unlocks your phone.
We’re not at General AI (yet), which would mean machines that think and reason across all domains like a human does. But the rapid progress in AI tools—especially in natural language processing and Generative AI —makes the future feel very close.
Why I Find It So Fascinating
What excites me the most is how AI is quietly embedded in things we use every day—things we don’t even question anymore. Google Maps rerouting traffic, autocorrect fixing our typos, Spotify knowing our vibe before we do.
And it’s not just convenience. AI is also starting to amplify creativity, not just automate tasks. Tools like ChatGPT, DeepSeek are showing that machines can help us make things—stories, code, music, designs.
That shift—from AI as a tool for efficiency to AI as a collaborator in creativity—is something I think we’ll look back on as a major turning point.
Some Big Questions I’m Sitting With
As much as I love exploring AI, it’s impossible to ignore the ethical questions it brings up:
- How do we keep AI unbiased and fair?
- Who’s responsible when AI systems make mistakes?
- What does it mean for jobs, creativity, or even identity when machines start doing what humans do?
I don’t pretend to have answers. But I think asking these questions—and not just blindly adopting every shiny new tool—is part of being a thoughtful human in the age of AI.

For me, AI isn’t just about technology. It’s about what kind of future we’re building—and who gets to shape it.
I’m trying to stay curious, learn openly, and ask questions even when they’re uncomfortable. That’s how I want to show up in this space.
